Questions to ask before choosing a hair restoration treatment

Use your consultation to understand the diagnosis, compare options and discuss expectations, costs and follow-up.

Hair restoration procedure at Lumeraa Aesthetics

Hair restoration conversations can quickly become a list of treatment names. A useful consultation connects those options to your particular concern. Bring a few questions that help you understand the reasoning behind a recommendation, along with the time and commitment it may involve.

Start by understanding the cause

Ask what type of hair loss the clinician suspects and what supports that assessment. The AAD explains that an evaluation can include your history and a close examination of the hair and scalp. Tests are sometimes needed when an underlying condition is suspected; they are not automatically part of every consultation. Read the AAD's diagnosis and treatment overview.

Explain when you first noticed changes and whether your main concern is shedding, a receding hairline, patchiness or reduced density. Ask whether the aim of a proposed plan is to slow further loss, encourage growth or improve the appearance of coverage.

Compare the options and expectations

Ask why the recommended option suits your assessment and what alternatives deserve discussion. Find out what happens if you choose to wait. The AAD notes that responses vary and visible changes can take months, so ask when your own plan should be reviewed and how progress will be assessed. See the AAD's treatment guidance.

If a transplant is being discussed, ask how suitability will be assessed, which technique is proposed and who will carry out each stage. Discuss the appearance you hope for and the limits of what can be achieved. Avoid using someone else's result as a prediction of your own.

Discuss recovery, follow-up and costs

Ask about possible unwanted effects and the instructions you would need to follow. Hair transplantation involves recovery and carries surgical risks, including bleeding, infection and scarring, as explained by the NHS. Ask the clinician how these apply to the proposed procedure and whom you would contact with a concern. Read the NHS hair transplant overview.

Request an itemised estimate covering the treatment, follow-up visits and any ongoing care. Check how appointments would fit around work or travel. Leave with enough information to consider the recommendation and ask further questions before deciding.
